In recent years, there has been a trend towards more modern Karwa Chauth where husbands often tend to keep the fast along with their wife to express their love and devotion.

The History

The origins of Karwa Chauth are unclear, but it is thought to have originated in the Rajasthan region of India. The festival is mentioned in several Hindu scriptures, including the Shiva Purana and the Skanda Purana.

According to one legend, Karwa Chauth was first celebrated by Savitri, the wife of the legendary king Satyavan. Satyavan was destined to die an early death, but Savitri refused to accept her fate. She prayed to the god Yama, the god of death, and begged him to spare her husband's life. Yama was impressed by Savitri's devotion and granted her wish.

Another legend tells the story of Padmini, the wife of the Rajput king Ratan Singh. Padmini was renowned for her beauty and attracted the attention of the Mughal emperor Alauddin Khilji. Khilji invaded Chittorgarh, the capital of the Rajput kingdom, in order to capture Padmini. Ratan Singh was killed in the battle, and Padmini and the other women of Chittorgarh committed jauhar (self-immolation) to avoid capture by the Mughals.
